Case Study: ANIMATING MUSEUM COLLECTIONS

We began working with The Hepworth Wakefield as they prepared a major exhibition on the work of Stanley Spencer, one of Britain's most distinctive modern painters. Exploring themes of religion and sexuality, work and leisure, nature and industry, we wrote a script drawn from Spencer’s own letters and notebooks and animated his painting The Lovers (The Dustmen).

As a child, Stanley Spencer was always rummaging in dustbins – a broken tea pot, jam tin and cabbage stalk seemed to him a wondrous holy trinity. In this short film, made for the opening of the Hepworth Wakefield’s major new exhibition of his art, Spencer’s paintings are brought vividly to life with words from the artist’s notebooks.

The animation was hosted online on The Hepworth Wakefield website and pushed out through social media. It was also used as a trailer in local cinemas and shown online on the BBC and The Guardian to drive visitors to the exhibition. The animation achieved 50,000 views across the platforms. We also produced The Hepworth Wakefield's first ever Exhibition Audioguide, giving visitors unprecedented access to one of the most unique minds of the modern era. Over £6000 of revenue was raised from this audioguide.

Following the success of Spencer, The Hepworth Wakefield asked us to make an animation to launch their Riverside Garden campaign. The £2.2m project will transform an underused strip of land into one of the UK’s largest free public gardens by leading international designer Tom Stuart-Smith. People of all ages and backgrounds will enjoy exploring the landscaping, discovering sculpture and temporary installations and having adventures in our new artist-commissioned playground.
